Equipment For The Task
Plant hire brings machinery into a project for a defined stage rather than tying up equipment between contracts. Groundworkers may need an excavator and dumper together, while an estate maintenance team may only need a roller for a resurfacing window.
Think about the full material route. Excavating quickly is not useful if spoil cannot be moved away or the loading position blocks the next activity. Match the capacity of supporting machines to the working space and the pace of the operation.
We take enquiries for excavators, dumpers, telehandlers and compaction machinery across Bristol. State whether you need self-drive equipment or want to ask about an operated option. Operator provision, machine specification and availability are agreed separately before a booking is accepted.
Choosing The Specification
List the maximum access width, height restrictions and turning space for both the machine and the delivery vehicle. A machine that fits through the gate may still need more room to unload or turn safely inside the compound.
Describe the surface, slope, bearing conditions and any underground structures. Ground that carries a delivery van is not automatically suitable for tracked plant or a loaded handler. The project team must assess the route and working area.
Attachments change what a machine can do and may change its operating limits. Specify buckets, breakers, forks or other requirements at enquiry stage. Check compatibility, hydraulic connections and documentation rather than expecting an attachment to fit on arrival.
Safety And Site Responsibilities
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) apply to hired work equipment. The site team should confirm suitability, instructions, inspection arrangements and operator competence before machinery is put to work.
Where plant is used for lifting, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) may also apply. Lifts must be planned by a competent person, supervised appropriately and carried out safely. A general machine handover is not a lifting plan.
Separate moving machinery from pedestrians with a workable traffic plan. Delivery, refuelling, parking and maintenance also need space in that plan. Review the arrangement when the site layout changes rather than relying on the original drawing throughout the project.
Your Hire, Step By Step
Send the site postcode, work description and intended dates with an outline of machine requirements. If you are uncertain about size, give the working depth, reach, load or finished area needed so the specification can be discussed.
Review the quotation against the programme. Confirm transport, attachments, fuel arrangements, inspection documents and the procedure for reporting a breakdown. Make the self-drive or operated basis explicit in writing.
Prepare a suitable unloading point before delivery. Record the condition at handover and complete the daily checks described by the supplier. When work finishes, request off-hire in the agreed way and retain confirmation of collection arrangements.
Equipment Rates And Transport Charges
Plant hire cost is affected by machine class, duration, transport, attachments and the conditions of the hire agreement. Delivery distance and the type of vehicle required may matter as much as the basic hire rate on a short job.
Ask how fuel, cleaning, damage, theft cover and excess hours are treated. Confirm whether the quote includes VAT and what evidence of insurance is required. A change in machine size or hire dates should be agreed before the revised equipment is sent to site.
Coordinate The Machine Programme
Use the construction sequence to decide when each machine should arrive. An excavator may be needed before a roller, while a handler might only be required during a delivery window.
Keep a simple equipment schedule with start dates, responsible users and the planned off-hire point. If another trade delays the work, review the machine bookings promptly rather than letting several idle hires continue without a decision.
Plant Hire Questions
Is Plant Hire Self-Drive Or Operated?
Plant hire can be requested on a self-drive basis or with a request for an operated option. The quotation must state which arrangement is offered and what is included. For self-drive hires, your business remains responsible for appointing suitable operators and managing the work safely within the machine’s instructions and site controls.
Can Several Machines Be Hired Together?
Hiring several machines together can help coordinate excavation, loading and compaction on one programme. List each machine and the stage when it is needed, rather than assuming all items should arrive together. Confirm separate transport charges, hire start dates and collection instructions so idle equipment does not remain on hire unnecessarily.
